When you purchase CO2 removal through Carbon AI, the equivalent quantity of carbon removal is retired on your behalf and cannot be sold or transferred to any other party.
Carbon removal certificates purchased through Carbon AI represent verified, real, and permanent CO2 removal. Each certificate corresponds to one tonne (1,000 kg) of CO2 that has been removed from the atmosphere through Tao Climate's supported projects.
Purchases are made in whole-kilogram increments. Fractional tonnes are recorded precisely in our registry and reflect the exact quantity purchased.
Upon successful payment, the purchased CO2 removal quantity is immediately retired in our registry. Retirement means the removal is permanently recorded as having been claimed and cannot be resold, transferred, or claimed again by any other party.
You will receive a certificate confirmation referencing the retirement record, including the project name, quantity, date, and serial reference.
CO2 removal purchased via Carbon AI is sourced from Tao Climate's verified project portfolio. At launch, this includes the Ukraine Hemp Carbon Removal Project. Future projects may be added as they are verified and added to the Tao Climate inventory.
The specific project from which your removal is sourced will be identified in your certificate confirmation.
Tao Climate's CO2 removal projects are verified by independent third-party certification bodies. Verification standards include measurement and monitoring of CO2 sequestration, additionality, permanence, and avoidance of double counting.
Specific verification methodologies and certification standards are disclosed in the project documentation available on request.
Tao Climate works with projects that demonstrate long-term carbon storage durability. Industrial hemp-based CDR is durable for the growth cycle of the biomass, subject to storage and use conditions. Long-term storage agreements are in place with project operators to manage reversal risk.
In the event of an reversal event (where stored carbon is re-released), Tao Climate maintains a buffer pool of unretired removal to cover such events and protect certificate holders.
Tao Climate maintains strict control to prevent double counting of carbon removal certificates. Each tonne is retired only once and recorded in our registry with a unique identifier. Retired certificates cannot be resold or transferred.
Our registry is subject to periodic independent audit. You may request confirmation of your retirement record at any time.
Carbon removal certificates represent the carbon removal service provided by Tao Climate and its project partners. They do not represent legal ownership of land, biomass, or physical assets. Certificate holders do not acquire intellectual property rights over project methodologies or verification data.
Tao Climate may add, remove, or modify available carbon removal projects from time to time. Changes will be reflected in the product interface. Historical purchases remain valid and are not affected by subsequent project changes.
